Johnny Henkes, one of six children is born, bred, and educated in Cape Town, obtained his BA (LLB) from UCT and has been in practise for his own account for over 25 years. Whilst at university he was involved in many sporting activities, including playing Club cricket.
He completed his articles at Hazell and Rabie Attorneys in Cape Town and was subsequently admitted as an attorney. He did his military training in the SA Defence Force and ended up as a Military Law Officer at the Castle in Cape Town.
Some months after completing his National Service, he started the present firm’s predecessor–in-title Henkes Buswell, with friend and colleague Giles Buswell.
“I now have two female co-directors in Rene and Charlene but have to mention that there are no other males in the practise, which is somewhat disconcerting as I have four sisters and a wife, and am constantly whipped!”
“Seriously though, my co-directors are a great source of strength and inspiration,” says Johnny.
Johnny is a general practitioner, dealing with various types of commercial work, as well as High Court and Magistrates Court litigation, insolvency and business rescue, and numerous other related areas of law.
The other areas of his practise are sale agreements, leases, shareholders and members’ agreements, franchising, licensing, distribution and agency agreements. Johnny both personally and through various specialist consultants to the practice, also provides advice on labour issues, the registration of trademarks and logos, unlawful competition, insurance disputes, family law matters including maintenance, custody and other types of family violence interdicts, as well as debt collection.
In his leisure time, Johnny enjoys fishing, golfing, and hiking, while braaiing is a favourite weekend pastime, as well as sharing a good bottle of wine with friends.
“Our firm’s focus is to feel comfortable with our clients, and more importantly, for them to feel comfortable with us and in safe hands,” he said.
