Charlene obtained her BA and LLB degrees at the University of Stellenbosch in 2001. After completing her articles, she joined the firm as partner in 2006. She was admitted as conveyancer in the Cape of Good Hope Provincial Division in the same year and heads the conveyancing division of the practice.
Charlene specialises in providing independent legal advice on the signing of offers to purchase, for both sellers and buyers, including how to navigate suspensive conditions, what to look out for when obtaining clearance certificates, how to go about obtaining a bond and what documentation is needed in order to streamline the process, and much more.
While this practice has been in existence for 25 years and offers a fairly wide range of niche services, Charlene’s personal passion lies with property law and conveyancing. This entails “going the extra mile” sometimes, assisting clients who are either buying or selling their properties by “holding their hands”, offering independent advice on the process and how to avoid potential pitfalls, how to save money by being informed of their options in negotiations, or ensuring their intention matches the wording in the contract to avoid unwanted consequences.
With the benefits of technology, she regularly assists clients countrywide, even overseas, when they deal with property in South Africa.
Her other passion, she would describe as anything creative and lives this out by trying to do as much as she can to effectively promote Henkes Joubert Barry Inc’s individual partners and their specialist legal consultants – anything from writing content articles for the firm page and online publications; dreaming up and implementing legal pop-ups; assisting young start-ups with LegalTech ventures, while silently dreaming to have her own app or “Ask Charlene BOT” in the future.
